An Actual Conversation in an Actual Relationship Between a Single Mom and a Single Dad

Her: I hate being in limbo.

Him: Are we in limbo?

Her: Yes we’re in limbo!

Him: What are we in limbo about?

Her: We have two places, two lives, all this back and forth is all keeping our relationship in limbo.

Him: I thought we were…happy?  I’m happy.  I didn’t know we were in limbo

Her: Well cut it OUT! How can you be happy like this?

<Pause. Did I just say “stop being happy” to him? What?  Smile at silliness of my statement…he smiles back.>

Him: I think we should go shopping for a ring in the next few weeks.

Her:    :-)

  • Swati says:

Oh geez ThatOneMom…I feel like I am the last person who should be offering advice (but I will anyway)…my boyfriend and I had kind of been talking about “spending our lives together” and I think the guys walk away going “ok, great – we’ll do that sometime” and we walk away going “ok, great, I’m ready now”! I had always made it clear that at this age & stage in my life, I didn’t want to date somebody to 4-5 years to “figure it out” – not that I’m in a rush or anything – but I really find endless dating frustrating (though if it’s good for both parties, then it’s good). Honestly, my boyfriend had no idea I was completely frustrated with the “temporary” feeling of it all until I said I hated being in limbo (which may have been a yelp rather than a calm and gentle statement of fact).
    Does that help at all?

  • Swati says:

Aww Shucks Tiia…now I am turning all red velvet cake RED :-) !

    Thanks Stefanie – I am excited…2nd time is a charm I’ve heard!!

Hi Liz – my ring(s) of choice are 2 wedding bands – one platinum and one in gold (so I can switch off which one I wear based on the jewelry I’m wearing…). J. was relieved to hear I wanted just bands and no giant solitaire…til he realized that the bands needed to be sparkly – haha! I decided on bands instead as I know I’d never wear a solitaire. And he did a wonderful job with shopping (but that’s another post :-) ).
