The Relationship – Chapter Three (a very short story)
Carefully chiseled ice sculptures. Crisp table clothes. Gentle music. Dazzling flowers.
She was so happy. She had spent a year planning every detail. Friends and relatives complimented her, as did he, now her husband.
He was so handsome in his tux; and so loving, like when they first met. They fed each other cake, danced their first dance, and glanced at each other whenever possible. She loved him.
It was 9:30pm when she first heard his words slurring. He yelled, laughed, and suddenly slept at the head table. Guests chimed in with “That happens!” and “Don’t worry honey, it’ll be fine!” as they exited the reception happily. They didn’t know she saw it at least weekly, sometimes more.
She got him to bed and quietly set the alarm. They would need to be up early to catch the plane for their honeymoon.

Oh, my heart aches for her. And I’m very interested to find out more. I think you manage to say a lot in a few words – brevity is such a skill.
Peryl
Great new chapter! I agree with Peryl that you say so much in a few words. I’m really enjoying your writing. I feel like I’m getting to know the main character. Have a great weekend!
You are a poet!
Thanks ladies! That means so much to me

You have a way with teasing people! That was well written and somewhat thought provoking. Questions popped into my mind such as why did she love him so much if he was getting drunk weekly? How could she really be so happy? Was she enabling him? What kind of woman is she to accept this quietly? See what I mean? Very nice…
Oh my goodness! I’ve been there! My second husband did that sort of thing.
He “fell asleep” early on our wedding night, so I ended up sitting on the hotel floor, at the foot of the bed, in front of the TV, wearing my silky nightie purchased just for that occasion, eating leftovers from the reception, and listening to him snore. He was passed out diagonally on the bed in his suit, snoring.
There was also the time where he “fell asleep” in the middle of an outdoor family gathering amidst all the kids and cousins. This was the first big family gathering he attended with me after the wedding and he drank too much and passed out? I got the same reaction from my family of, “Well, this happens sometimes,” or, “He must be tired from the drive.”
He got the boot after one year of marriage. I didn’t have time for that behavior from grown man. He is lonnnnnng gone!
You have a knack with this writing stuff. Great post!
Vivianne: shucks, thanks for your support as always – especially in my “new” venture into short stories!
Robin: Good for you for getting away from the child-man person after only a year (they trick us because they look like adults…) I had a sentence in there originally about her staring at the nightgown she had purchased for her wedding night – but took it out! So appreciate knowing it resonates.

I’m loving these short chapters. Your writing is exquisite. So brief yet full of searing details, powerful feelings, and moments that stick in my mind like glue. If this is going to be a whole book, I’m buying it!! I’ll be your first customer lined up at Borders on the day it arrives. XOXOXXOX
Nice story. Dropping in from MBC.

I love the detailed descriptions. It keeps me coming for more since one story just teases you into the next. You’re a natural writer. =D
Another great chapter. I love the way you write. Soooo talented. Beth
